My Review of The Ghost-Seer; or the Apparitionist; and Sport of Destiny

am unable to explain how unbelievably wretched this book was. The book was published in 1789 so the language was a barrier, but not an unattainable goal to reach with the help of a dictionary. The plot was intriguing at times but left much to be desired. The book is of course incomplete which to some may make it more interesting because you can draw your own conclusions as to what happens to the characters but for me was extremely disappointing, considering the time I put in to understand the language that was being used.

The second story that is attached at the end of the book is in no way related to the first and even as a short story is a disappointing story of the rise and fall of a man and how we can once again rise to our former glory with perseverance. Of course the character who hit his lowest point due to his arrogance and lack of compassion once again falls into this same pattern once restored.

I would not recommend this book or books unless you have a desire to research the language and to be unfulfilled at the unfortunate ending and additional frustrating, insufficient short story.

You can buy a copy of the first edition on eBay for $850.
